The Meaning of Life Catechism
The way we recognize key moments in our lives is largely what helps shape its meaning. Our first paycheck may be the smallest one we ever receive, nevertheless it is one of the most important. But what does it mean? Have we become an “adult” or perhaps it represents freedom to do what we want. Each of those meanings may lead us to spend it a certain way. In Scripture we are encouraged to assign to the first paycheck a particular meaning. By giving it as a gift to God, we say it means that God is good and that he is our provider. We also acknowledge His ownership of everything.
In the Anglican tradition, the Book of Common Prayer contains the rites of passage that mark key moments of our human experience. The liturgies guide us to assign life-giving and redemptive meaning to our birth, baptism, marriage, sickness, times of renewal, death, and finally new life.
In this Catechism Series we will investigate the meaning found in Scripture through these liturgies. Ultimately, we will learn the God- given meaning of life while gaining the tools to celebrate, wait, renew, and die- as well as having the good story of the God who is with us all along the way.
The Theology of Birth
March 30th
Rev. Mark Ball
We will investigate what the Book of Common Prayer liturgy for the “Thanksgiving for the Birth or Adoption of a Child” teaches us about the joys and complexities of birth. How should we celebrate the great good of birth while recognizing its significant responsibility and the fears and pains that accompany the topic for many?
